5 ways to improve your interviewing skills

The skill of interviewing can make or break a company or small business. Getting it wrong it can be a nightmare, but getting it right can be the best experience for all concerned. Here are the top five ways to improving your interviewing skills both as an interviewer and as an interviewee.

  1. Nonverbal communication: practice the art of the firm handshake, making eye contact and standing straight. This gives you the upper edge as the interviewer while also testing the strength of the candidate. Speak with a confident tone, but be careful not to be too egotistical or austere.   
  2. Formal dress: even if the company has a casual code of dressing on a daily basis, make a mark and dress formally. As an interviewer, you are setting the scene by your image creating a sense of importance in front of the candidate and as an interviewee you are showing care and attention.
  3. Listening skills: as an interviewer, observe the listening skills of the candidate and don’t talk too much. Observe the body language of the candidate and don’t be too familiar with the candidate. Be clear on your boundary as an interviewer so as to maintain a professional stance, even if you are interviewing someone you know already either from within the company or locally. As an interviewee listen intently and be concise and clear in your answers without being too egotistical. Feel free to offer examples of past experiences that might be beneficial in showing your suitability for the job on offer.  
  4. Ask questions: open ended questions are the best way for both parties in the interview to explore the potential possibilities for the future. This provides the opportunity to gain a sense of suitability and what lies under the surface of the candidate’s resume on the desk. As an interviewer, have your homework done so as to know who you are meeting before the interview time. As an interviewee, know everything there is to know about the business or company you are hopefully going to work for. Demonstrate skills of reliability and honesty.  
  5. Take notes: as an interviewer, take notes and take your time. Don’t rush the process. As an interviewee, be patient and respectful and know basic etiquette like “please & thank you,” or say such things as “it was a pleasure to have the opportunity to speak with you today, thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.” No matter what type of employment is being discussed, manners always go a long way in making a good first impression.
