If you are a newbie to the world of Resale Rights you will have probably have stumbled across many different variations of the Resale industry.
While only a few years ago it was fairly black and white with Basic Resale Rights, Master Resale Rights. Giveaway Rights, Private Label Rights you knew exactly where you stood with the product.
These days it seems the publishers like to get all technical and in some cases completely confuse matters with their gobbledeegook.
I hope this guide will help in explaining all the many different rights that resellers face.
Please understand this is how I personally view the different forms of resale rights, reprint rights etc I am not giving any legal advice at all, just a guide to get you on the right track.
Master Resale Rights:
It goes without saying that Master Resale Rights are highly desirable, with people scrambling all over the internet looking for the newest product to promote.
Master Resale Rights not only allow you to resell the product, but also pass on the rights to your customer so that they can sell the product also.
In many cases resellers either sell the product as is, or they also offer the option of reprint rights (Master Resale Rights) and normally charging three times as much as the product costs in itself.
Private Label Rights:
Private Label Rights are king right now, with more and more membership sites and PLR packages popping up all over the place.
This is a highly desirable product as you can change the product in any way that you want, change text, change the source code, even add your name as the author/creator in many cases. In saying this, alot of people think they are now the owner after obtaining Private Label Rights, please understand that you are not unless stated!
Read the license carefully before you alter any part of the product.
While there are those who will profit from selling products with Private Label Rights, the smart resellers will create their own product with the source files included, for an eBook the source files are normally in MS Document format.
They will create their own eCover, own website, graphics, add their own affiliate links and even add links to more products in their collection.
Basic Resale Rights:
This simply means that once you purchase a product you can use it for yourself and even sell the product, but your customer receives no rights whatsoever.
Giveaway Rights:
This basically means you have the right to giveaway the product for free, for some this may not seem very lucrative, but for others this is a great way of adding that 'Free Bonuses' to your salespage.
Generally the product will come with a license and will explain if you can giveaway the product or not.
Rebranding Rights:
These type of products are similar the PLR, but you are often restricted as to what you can do with these products.
Rebranding generally means that you can add your own affiliate links etc to the eBook or Software title.
Royalty Rights:
Even though that you do have the right to resell the product, these rights normally mean that you do not get to keep 100% profit, in fact you will have to pay the original author a percentage or commission for any profits that you make.
Source Code Rights:
These are also highly desirable, but also fall into the same category as Private Label Rights meaning that you can add, edit or change the eBook or Software title so that the product has no flaws before you resell.
Along with these rights you will also be instructed on how you can resell the product, and this will be given in the terms and conditions.
This can mean whether you can....
Sell it on auction sites, ie eBay.
Give it away as a bonus.
Giveaway the product.
Giveaway a branded version.
Package the product with other products, in some cases a lot of publisers will allow you to package the product but only with 1 or 2 other products.
Have the product included into a membership site.
Alter the product from its original form.
If you can pass on the rights to resell to your customers.
A publisher may even give you a suggested retail price, and even state that a product can be sold for no less than the price given.
A word of caution, if there is no license included with the product then ask the seller which distribution rights are allowed.
While there are honest and hard working resellers out there, there are (Unfortunately) those who will manipulate things, even stating "Master Resale Rights Included" but in fact the product never did come with Master Resale Rights, and at some point Mr Publisher will get upset and often lead to legal action.
I hope in some ways this has helped explaining the many different forms of Resale Rights, but I am not naive, just around the corner another publisher will think of another Resale Right to throw in the mix!
I have been asked "Where do they get all these products from?" well that is easy, products pass from reseller to reseller, they pay crazy monthly membership fees, and in some cases they even go straight to the source (The Publisher) and make an offer the publisher cannot refuse!
eBay is another source, although the more current up to date products normally state that they cannot be sold on an auction site, meaning a lot of the products are old and dated.
Another source is purchasing from wholesalers, for instance ourselves at Master-Resale.com, with over 1000 products including packages at discounted prices, we are visited on a constant basis by resellers to add one or two brand new products to their ever growing collection.
We add in the region of 30 to 40 brand new products every week, so there is always a product someone has not seen yet!
I wish you much success in your online ventures!
