What is Domain Name System (DNS)?

DNS is short for Domain Name System. Domain name system is technology which translates domain names into Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (form of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx).

Domain name is easier to remember than IP address which is very similar to telephone book. Each computer (on internet it is called 'host') has at least one IP address (one 'telephone number') that uniquely identifies it from all other computers on the internet.

DNS system is like telephone book with names and their telephone numbers.
